The activist and visual artist Bordalo II returned to the island of Corvo to create another artwork in which “waste” is used as raw material to build a piece that aims to raise awareness and encourage a different perspective on waste and consumption.
This work will be installed within the Corvo Biological Reserve (currently undergoing redevelopment), located in the Topo area—a project funded by the Mar 2020 programme and led by the Municipal Chamber of Corvo in partnership with SPEA.
The artwork, entitled “The Grouper”, was presented to the community on 11 July 2023. This species was chosen as a tribute to the Caneiro dos Meros Voluntary Reserve (the only one in the Azores), created through the combined efforts of fishermen, divers, and the University of the Azores.
Bordalo II (an artistic name chosen in homage to the painter Real Bordalo, his grandfather) focuses his artistic practice on themes such as the excessive production of superfluous goods and overconsumption, which result in the continuous generation of “waste.” This very “waste” is used as the raw material for his works, with the “Big Trash Animals” series being his most recognisable body of work. Nature is thus represented using the very materials that contribute to its destruction.
