The Municipality of Corvo is taking firm steps towards a more sustainable future with the implementation of the “Sustainable Corvo 2030” project, an initiative aimed at transforming the island into the first Zero Waste island in the Azores.
This strategic project combines innovative ecological practices with the enhancement of the island’s natural and cultural heritage, reinforcing the Municipality’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the circular economy, and the balanced development of the territory.
The initiative follows the Municipality’s existing commitment to achieving “Zero Waste” certification, making Corvo the first island municipality in Portugal to apply for this distinction. The aim is to significantly reduce waste production, promote reuse and recycling, and implement more efficient environmental management solutions.
In its initial phase, the project focuses on the separation and local treatment of bio-waste, seeking to avoid transporting these materials to other islands. Planned measures include the implementation of a door-to-door collection system, the creation of community composting units, and the distribution of specific bio-waste containers to households.
At the same time, the renewal of the municipal waste collection fleet is planned, including the acquisition of low-emission vehicles and equipment to support composting and waste management. An environmental awareness and education campaign will also be promoted, engaging the population in adopting more sustainable daily practices.
Through this project, the Municipality of Corvo strengthens its position as a regional and national reference in sustainability, combining environmental preservation with quality of life and local economic development.
The “Sustainable Corvo 2030” project therefore represents another decisive step towards establishing the island as a model of good environmental practices and innovation in waste management.
