The celebrations of Municipal Day in Corvo were marked by a tribute to the statesman and jurist Mouzinho da Silveira (1780–1849), a key figure in the administrative reforms that contributed to the organisation of local government in Portugal.
As part of the commemorations, a sculptural monument was unveiled outside the Town Hall, in a ceremony attended by the Mayor and the author of the work, sculptor and ceramist Carlos Oliveira.
The artwork, crafted in basalt and marble, pays tribute to the historic moment when Corvo was elevated to the status of a municipality. The sculpture features the inscription symbolising this transformation:
“It is hereby elevated to the status of a town and shall have an independent Municipal Chamber. Its name shall be Vila do Corvo. 20 June 1832.”
This initiative aims to enhance the historical memory of the municipality and strengthen the connection between Corvo’s past and its institutional present, highlighting the importance of the liberal reforms in consolidating local autonomy.
Through this tribute, the Municipality of Corvo marks its institutional day, celebrating its identity, its history, and the path of administrative and civic affirmation of the smallest island of the Azores.
