In anticipation of 25 April, the exhibition “Women and Resistance – Novas Cartas Portuguesas and Other Struggles” is once again on display on the façade of Corvo Town Hall, in an initiative that is being held for the third consecutive year in the Municipality of Corvo.
Originally conceived as a temporary exhibition by the Aljube Museum – Resistance and Freedom, and later transformed into a travelling exhibition as part of a project promoted by its former Director, Rita Rato, the exhibition represents an important contribution to reflection on historical memory, freedom, and women’s rights.
Through its images and texts, the exhibition seeks to “understand the role of repression, the value of solidarity, and the importance of victory within the literary and political process involving the Three Marias – Maria Isabel Barreno, Maria Teresa Horta, and Maria Velho da Costa.”
It also highlights “the role of many women who, coming from different backgrounds and life paths, conceived and carried out struggles for their rights, for social justice, and for freedom, from the 1930s up to 25 April,” emphasising the diversity of female experiences and contributions to the fight for democracy.
Integrated into the public space, the exhibition aims to promote access to culture and collective memory, bringing the community closer to key narratives of contemporary Portuguese history.
The exhibition “Women and Resistance – Novas Cartas Portuguesas and Other Struggles” will be available throughout the month of April, reaffirming the commitment of the Municipality of Corvo to promoting the values of April, equality, and citizenship.
