The “Paths of Memory” project was presented on 25 September, in the Main Hall of Corvo Town Hall, during a session dedicated to the enhancement, preservation, and dissemination of the island’s historical, cultural, and identity heritage.
The presentation of the new digital platform was attended by several collaborators and project coordinators, including Professor Eduardo Guimarães, who highlighted the importance of this initiative for safeguarding collective memory and transmitting knowledge to future generations.
During the session, the Catalogue and the Educational Games associated with the project were also presented, as tools designed to promote learning and community engagement, particularly among younger audiences, with local history and heritage.
The ceremony also included the presentation of the book “The Wool Cycle in Corvo: from the Community Management of Common Land to the Five Needles – a Story of Resilience”, in the presence of its author Hélio Nuno Santos Soares, a work portraying an important cultural and social legacy of the island, linked to its traditions and community practices.
The “Paths of Memory” project encourages the development of more focused and targeted sub-programmes, capable of articulating actions that simultaneously address both the tangible and intangible dimensions of community life. This approach enables the people of Corvo to preserve, interpret, and manage their heritage with a view to sustainable development.
All collected material is available on the “Paths of Memory” platform, in a bilingual version — Portuguese and English — making the information accessible to a broader audience. The platform is dynamic and interactive, featuring interactive maps and allowing for the future addition of new content and data.
Structured into two main areas — “Memory and Territory” and “Paths – Interpretive Trails” — the platform aims to bring together different dimensions of knowledge, opening the way for new areas of study, research, and learning.
Through this initiative, the Municipality of Corvo reinforces its commitment to the enhancement of local heritage, promoting collective memory as a tool for identity, education, and development.
