Corvo’s handicrafts

Working from a former chapo (traditional storage building) transformed into a workshop, he is dedicated to crafting handmade wooden pieces, with particular emphasis on the traditional Corvo locks, a symbol of the island’s identity and ingenuity. His work is rooted in artisanal techniques, the use of traditional tools, and a careful, respectful relationship with raw materials.

More than producing objects, David T. Posch’s work represents an active contribution to preserving and promoting the island’s traditional craftsmanship, keeping alive a practice that forms part of Corvo’s collective memory. His workshop also serves as a space for sharing and awareness, bringing both residents and visitors closer to the island’s material culture and traditions.

Aparas de Madeira thus stands as a project that brings together craftsmanship, identity, and cultural continuity, forming part of the living heritage of Corvo Island.

Born into a family of artisans, she grew up in an environment deeply connected to manual work and local culture, beginning her own journey as an artisan in her teenage years. Since then, she has played a central role in preserving traditional knowledge passed down through generations, with particular emphasis on the production of the Barretas do Corvo, an iconic element of the island’s traditional attire.

Her work contributes to the preservation, appreciation, and contemporary adaptation of this cultural heritage, while maintaining the authenticity of its original techniques.

Certified by the CADA – Azores Centre for Craftsmanship and Design and part of the Marca Açores network, her work combines tradition with recognised quality, promoting Corvo’s craftsmanship at regional, national, and international levels.

Through her dedication, Rosa Mariana Mendonça establishes herself as one of the key guardians of Corvo’s craft heritage, ensuring the continuity of a unique cultural identity deeply rooted in the island’s history.

Dedicated to preserving and promoting Corvo’s traditional craftsmanship, with particular emphasis on the creation of the iconic Barreta do Corvo, one of the most representative symbols of the island’s cultural identity.

Handcrafted using traditional techniques, the barreta preserves skills and knowledge passed down through generations, standing as a symbol of the island’s ethnographic heritage and collective memory.

Through her work, the artisan contributes to the continuity of local traditions, promoting Corvo’s craftsmanship as an authentic expression of Azorean culture.

Registered with the CADA – Azores Centre for Craftsmanship and Design, she is dedicated to the handmade production of the traditional Barretas do Corvo.

Her work plays an important role in safeguarding and continuing this intangible cultural heritage, keeping alive an art form deeply rooted in the island’s collective memory.
