Asas de Anjo (Angels’ Wings)
The sculpture “Asas de Anjos” (Angels’ Wings), created by sculptor Carlos Oliveira, was inaugurated near Porto do Boqueirão in Corvo in tribute to the 17 victims of the 1942 shipwreck of the vessel “Senhora da Vitória”. The tragedy claimed the lives of residents from the neighbouring island of Flores, who were travelling to attend the festival of Our Lady of Miracles.
More than a work of art, it is a memorial that preserves collective memory and pays tribute to the victims, standing as a space for remembrance, reflection, and the celebration of Corvo’s island identity.
Sculpture Honouring Mouzinho da Silveira
The sculpture paying tribute to Mouzinho da Silveira, installed in the square of the Corvo Town Hall, marks the elevation of Corvo to municipality status and symbolises the island’s autonomy and historical identity.
Crafted in basalt and marble, the sculpture pays tribute to the decisive role of Mouzinho da Silveira in the administrative organisation of the territory, highlighting his contribution to the elevation of the former village of Corvo to town status and to the establishment of its own municipal authority.
The combination of materials reinforces its symbolic meaning: the dark, dense local basalt evokes the ocean surrounding the island, while the lighter Moleanos limestone represents the Corvo territory itself, with the statesman’s bust standing out as the central element of the composition.
Monument to the Overseas War Veterans
The Monument to the Overseas War Veterans, located in Vila do Corvo, was inaugurated on 1 May 2004 as a tribute to the island’s servicemen who lost their lives during the Overseas War.
The smonument commemorates the memory of Corvo’s servicemen who fell in the service of Portugal, preserving the legacy of their contribution and sacrifice. This monument holds significant historical and symbolic value for the local community, serving as a place of remembrance and respect dedicated to the soldiers of the smallest island in the Azores.
